Who We Are
A midwife and an executive walked into a bar. Just kidding - it’s not nice to make bar jokes when your audience is pregnant.
Anyway, the certified nurse midwife noticed in her years of practicing that the way people experience pregnancy is very different from how society portrays pregnancy. There is a lot of pressure put on pregnant people to suck it up, get it all right and be a cool, confident version of themselves throughout. She thought an app would be a great way to tell the truth about it all ...bringing a little foul-mouthed humor along for the ride.
Her executive friend knew she could have used an app like that when she was pregnant! She had spent the last 15 years studying how important mindfulness and connection are to people and their well-being in a work setting. Because she had seen the real world, positive effects, she wanted to add something that would help those going through the major life changes of pregnancy and motherhood to be more resilient, confident and happier.
With that, PregnantAF was born, delivering accurate pregnancy information in a loving, obnoxious, and sometimes brutally honest way. It’s a resource that answers some of your craziest questions, while addressing your real discomforts and worries. It lets you know when you should talk to your provider and what questions you should ask. It provides you with information to advocate for your own healthcare and to help ensure you and your provider are on the same page. It tells you some indelicate jokes to keep you laughing and has a daily positive mental exercise to keep you sane. You are now dealing with some huge life changes. We want to focus on you and treat you like the whole person you were before you started your pregnancy journey.
Our Pregnant AF App recognizes that families come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. We have done our best to be inclusive. That said, we may not always catch our own deeply-ingrained biases. If you notice an area in which our messaging could improve, please let us know. This app is a constant work in progress and we hope to make it better with each update.
We would like to extend enormous gratitude to the person who brought our idea to life. We were so incredibly lucky to find an app developer who believes in Pregnant AF and who had already made successful apps (very non-pregnancy related apps: WTForecast and BSNavigator). His gut feeling was that it was a good idea. Quite a few women in his life echoed that many pregnancy apps feel too clinical or non-inclusive. He was willing to go on this adventure with us and learn WAY too much about boobs, butts, and vaginas along the way. He’s now absolutely sure he never ever wants to get pregnant.
